Extrinsic motivation
Also said as External rewards, Carrot
Doing something for what it gets you: points, loot, money, a badge, or avoiding a penalty.
It gets people started on things they would not try otherwise, and that has real value. It also stops working when the reward does, so it can only carry a game for as long as you can keep paying.
Say it
“Use the daily quest to introduce the new crafting system, then drop it after a week. If people stop crafting when the reward stops, the reward was the only reason they did it.”
Where you’ve seen it
Xbox achievements, added with the Xbox 360 in 2005, gave people a score across every game for doing things they might never have tried, such as finishing on the hardest difficulty.
Not to be confused with intrinsic motivation
Extrinsic rewards come from outside the activity. They can sit on top of intrinsic enjoyment without harming it, particularly when they tell you that you did well.
