Breadcrumbing
Also said as Breadcrumbs, Breadcrumb trail
A trail of small rewards or items, each in sight of the last, that leads the player along a route. The player only ever decides to get the next one.
It guides without saying so, and it works in the dark or in a large space where a single goal would be out of sight. Space them further apart than the player can see and the trail simply stops being one.
Say it
“Players miss the upper route. Run a line of six coins up the ramp, no more than two screens' width apart, and arc the last three over the gap.”
Where you’ve seen it
Super Mario games lay lines of coins along a route, and arc them through the air to show the shape of a jump you might not have thought to try.
Not to be confused with signposting
Breadcrumbs pay you for walking the route, again and again. A signpost pays nothing and tells you once.
