Focal point
Also said as Point of interest, Visual hierarchy, Leading the eye
The one place the eye lands first. You make it with the strongest contrast, the only saturated colour, an isolated shape, or lines that point at it.
A picture with no focal point makes players search, and they stop looking. In a level, a focal point is a way to give directions without an arrow.
Say it
“Make the tower the focal point: it is the only warm thing on screen, it sits against the brightest sky, and the road bends towards it. Everything else stays at half contrast.”
Where you’ve seen it
Mirror's Edge turns the next useful pipe or door red against its white city, a system it calls Runner Vision, so your eye finds the route while you are running.
Not to be confused with waypoint marker
A marker is a sign painted on top of the world. A focal point is the world itself arranged so you look there.
