Foreground framing

Also said as Framing, Foreground elements, Natural frame

Placing dark shapes close to the camera, such as branches, rocks or a doorway, around the edge of the view so they frame what matters.

It gives a flat picture a sense of depth and of being somewhere, and it points the eye inward. Used carelessly, it covers the action, so keep it out of the play space.

“Add foreground framing to the vista: near-black branches in the top left and rocks along the bottom, moving at 1.5 times camera speed, blurred, and never over the player's path.”

Ori and the Blind Forest places dark out-of-focus shapes close to the camera, and creatures even walk along the foreground before stepping onto Ori's plane.

A vignette is an even darkening of the screen corners added afterwards. Foreground framing uses real objects in the world, which move as the camera moves.
