Minimap
Also said as Radar, Mini-map
A small map in a corner of the screen, showing what's nearby and where you are. It answers "where am I and where do I go?" without opening anything.
It makes large spaces easy to cross, and it is expensive. People end up steering by it, and can drive through your beautiful city while looking at a small square in the corner.
Say it
“Use a 200 px circular minimap, player up, with a 150 m radius. Show roads and objectives, not enemies, so people still look at the street.”
Where you’ve seen it
Namco's Rally-X (1980) put a radar beside the maze showing the flags and enemy cars, and it is often credited as an early minimap. The Grand Theft Auto series made a corner map standard for open worlds.
Not to be confused with waypoint
A minimap shows you the surroundings, and you do the working out. A waypoint gives you the answer.
