Quicksave
Also said as Save scumming, Quickload, Save anywhere, Reload abuse
One button that saves right now, and another that takes you back. Save scumming is what people do with it: reloading again and again until the dice fall their way, or until they've got through without a scratch.
It respects your time and it also dissolves risk. A 30% shot is really only a 30% shot if you have to live with the miss. Many people will optimise the fun out of a game if allowed, so choose knowingly.
Say it
“Store the random seed in the save, so a reloaded shot lands the same way unless the player does something different. Add an Ironman mode with a single save.”
Where you’ve seen it
XCOM: Enemy Unknown stores its random number seed in the save, so reloading and taking the same shot gets the same result, and its Ironman mode allows no going back at all. The Enemy Within expansion added an optional setting that re-rolls on load, and its name is Save Scum.
Not to be confused with permadeath
Quicksaves make every choice reversible. Permadeath makes none of them reversible. Most games lie somewhere between.
